Letterboxd is an app for tracking what movies you’ve watched or want to watch and I’ve been using it since I was in college. For a long time, I’ve been looking for a Letterboxd equivalent for my video game addiction. Uh, I mean, hobby. I’ve come across a few apps for managing your game library, but none that were as intuitive, social-centered, and, to be honest, as sleek as the one I ended on; GG.
No, I’m not saying good game (or even gosh golly) that’s the name of the website and application. GG is essentially the same as Letterboxd, you can search an ever-growing list of games, almost all of which have proper box art, and add them to one of six different categories: Want to Play, Playing, Beaten, Completed, Shelved, and Abandoned. You can also give the said game a rating out of five stars, add it to a list, or write a review for it to share your thoughts.
It gets better. If you find a game you’re unsure of, you can look at screenshots, read reviews written by other players, and see what lists the game has been placed in. And if you decide to pick up the game and play it, you can even see everyone else on the app who is currently playing the game too. Assuming of course, they’re staying up to date with it.
There is an Elite membership available for the app which will give you profile customization, bonus stats, early access to new features, and more. The subscription costs $4.99 per month if billed monthly or $48.99 per year if billed yearly. Speaking of early features, the developer has a roadmap that transparently shows everything they are working on, plans to work on, and are considering working on. On the horizon right now: the ability to delete profiles while updating play status system, addition of missing games to the database, and the merging of DLC with their respective games are on the horizon. To be entirely honest, even the free version of the app is great, but I do recommend supporting the app developer if you can.
The only “feature” the app is missing is the ability to track what games you own. But this is a small problem and for me, I just simply made a list with all the games in my physical game library. In the future, it would be cool to possibly have a way to enter your game collection and have the app pick a game at random from that list for you to play. A good way to widdle down your backlog. According to the roadmap, they are considering adding a shuffle function to lists that does a similar thing.
Being a social app, you can share your profile with your friends and follow people as well. Currently, the app is still pretty small and there aren’t too many people to follow on the platform. However, several people in the games industry do already have profiles including Greg Miller of Kinda Funny and Jonathon Dornbush from IGN.
