There is still a good bit that is not known about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, the next game within the Borderlands universe, but Gearbox and the official Wonderlands social media accounts have ensured a steady flow of information to keep us hooked until the game’s March 25, 2022 release.
It was recently announced that Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon’s Keep, a major DLC from Borderlands 2, is getting a stand-alone release on consoles and PC. This DLC is an absolutely great way to get a taste of what Wonderlands will be like, but be careful because this DLC contains major spoilers for Borderlands 2 as it is a Bunkers and Badasses (Borderlands version of Dungeons and Dragons) campaign that Tiny Tina uses as a way to deal with the death of an important character in the Borderlands universe. If you still would like to experience this amazing story, it is currently free through the Epic Games Store until November 16 but will be available for purchase for $9.99.
As for the actual game, we have gotten some new information and even a small tease of the first two of the six playable classes. The most notable change in Wonderlands is that you get to customize your own hero and will not be forced to choose a specific character. The game also adds melee weapons for the first time in Borderlands franchise history, but outside of those two changes the game ultimately will play like a Borderlands game. Throughout the game you will be able to use two of the classes at the same time, one as a primary and one as a secondary that you unlock later in the campaign. Each class will have its own unique skill tree that you will fill out as you level up similar to every other RPG as well as two unique action skills. The two classes that we know of at the moment are The Brr-Zerker, an ice-powered tank-type class, and The Stabbomancer, a critical-hit-focused stealth class.
The Brr-Zerker wields a Cryo-infused ax and as the name implies will play similar to Brick aka The Berserker from the first Borderlands meaning the action skills will focus on close-quarters combat. The Brr-Zerker’s action skills are called Feral Surge and Dreadwind. Feral Surge allows you to close the gap on your enemies as you leap and slam your ax into them, dealing massive cryo damage upon impact. Dreadwind is a spinning ax attack that not only deals cryo damage but freezes the ground underneath your enemies.
The Stabbomancer summons magical blades and uses the shadows to their advantage. This character will play similar to Zero from Borderlands 2 that uses his cloaking ability to sneak up on enemies and attack their vulnerabilities to benefit from additional critical hit damage. The Stabbomancer’s action skills are called Ghost Blade and From the Shadows. Ghost Blade is a spell that spawns a giant dual-blade that spins dealing area damage, the blade does appear to also be moveable showing that it likely will be active for a certain amount of time. From the Shadows is a spell that activates a stealth mode that gives you increased damage while remaining hidden.
So far this is all we know about Gearbox’s next game in the Borderlands universe, but I am sure that more details will continue to come out as we get closer to the game’s release in March. The next opportunity I can see would be at the Game Awards on December 9 where we would get more information, but Gearbox is unpredictable and can drop news at any point. Are you excited for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands? Are you gonna play all the Borderlands games in anticipation? Let us know down in the comments.
