Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Expansion Revealed

CD Projekt Red has broken its silence about upcoming content for Cyberpunk 2077 following the game’s full next-gen release update earlier this year. The latest episode of Night City Wire was an Edgerunners Special that centered around the upcoming Netflix anime from Studio Trigger. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells a ten-episode story of a mercenary that’s canonical to the game. The anime was written by CD Projekt Red and animated beautifully by the studio behind Kill La Kill. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will air exclusively on Netflix on September 13.

The team also announced that Roach Race, the playable arcade mini-game in Cyberpunk 2077 starring a familiar-looking white-haired hero and his trusty horse Roach, is also coming to mobile devices. The game is free, will have no microtransactions (thank god), and is available today.

Then there’s the main update which goes live today in Cyberpunk 2077 and ties the game and anime together along with adding some new features. For starters, you can get the jacket Martinez (the anime’s protagonist) wears and a special weapon from the show in the game and, though not excessive, there are also a few easter eggs to be found around the city. Additionally, transmog, a long-awaited feature in Cyberpunk 2077, is finally here as Wardrobe in V’s apartments and safe houses. This allows players to wear what they want without having to sacrifice stats. There are also enhanced customization options when you visit a Ripperdoc.

It should be noted that this update will be the last major update on last-gen systems. As for future updates, the team promises to have a total rework of the cop system, another feature players have been asking for, as well as improved vehicle and melee combat. Those updates are on the horizon, but there’s no date on when they’re to be expected.

Now let’s talk about the highly anticipated expansion. Nearly two years since release, the Night City Wire gave us a short teaser for Cyberpunk 2077‘s first story expansion. Phantom Liberty is a spy-thriller set in an all-new district of Night City. Keanu Reeves popped into the stream as well to say that he will be returning to reprise the role of Johnny Silverhand when the DLC launches in 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia, and PC. Welcome to the New United States of America.

UPDATE: This article has been up for a few hours now and we are updating it to add a small bit of very important information. The CP2077 YouTube account has been interacting with fans in the comments of the Phantom Liberty trailer and in a reply to multiple people, they have said that “Phantom Liberty is the only planned expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.” This isn’t a huge surprise considering The Witcher 3 only had two major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, but this does put more pressure on Phantom Liberty to deliver a more significant chunk of story content.

That’s all there is to know about this special episode of The Night City Wire. Are you excited about the new updates and content coming to Cyberpunk 2077? Let us know down in the comments. We reviewed the next-gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 just last month and said that while the game is still not without flaws, you shouldn’t let them stop you from experiencing one of the best video games ever conceived.
