The Bridge Curse 2: The Extraction is a horror game from Tiwanese-based developer Softstart Entertainment. The game has been out for a few months on PC but it just recently came to consoles, which is where we checked it out. Thank you to the PQube and Gamera Games for sending us a PlayStation 5 code to play right in time for Halloween.
The game’s roughly five-hour narrative is set in the halls of Wen Hua University, renowned in Taiwan for its ghost tales and folklore. The story consists of 4 characters, each giving you a taste of the urban legends that haunt the halls of the school. If you’re looking for a short and jumpy ride, The Bridge Curse 2 is a pretty good experience with nice visuals to boot. The game only manages to sustain the suspense for brief intervals of time with unique enemy encounters like the Mad Ballerina being a highlight.
However, there were a few drawbacks that make it hard to unequivocally recommend. The first is the writing and dialogue, which undoubtedly got muddled in translation, resulting in a game that’s hard to take seriously. It’s for this reason that, although the game does have an English dub, it might be a more immersive plot if you play it subbed.
Then there is the puzzle design. Most of the puzzles in The Bridge Curse 2 are pretty simple and don’t require much thought to solve. In fact, a similar note about a lack of mechanical depth could be said about most of the game. Varied gameplay mechanics for puzzles and/or characters would help keep players engaged in the story.
To wrap it up, The Bridge Curse 2 is spooky in bursts but not wholly satisfying in its conclusion. Regardless of which of the two endings you get.
